The Turkish “Martyrs Day” On 18th March Clayhall Naval Cemetery, Turkish Section, Gosport
The moving ceremony took place on a beautiful sunny day in this small and immaculate Turkish Cemetery where 23 Turkish sailors are buried. They had died of Cholera whilst visiting Gosport in 1850 for cross deck training with the Royal Navy.
H.E. The Turkish Ambassador led the commemoration event followed by a senior naval officer and prayers. Wreaths were laid that included one from President John Crowe for G&DI and Dr Haldun Solmazturk for the Gallipoli Association of Turkey ‘Gelibolu Dernegi’.
It was very well attended. It was a happy event filled with the laughter of the children whilst remembering those that had gone before them. A very warm welcome was extended to President John Crowe.
