River Clyde Commander Honoured
Edward Unwin, commander of SS River Clyde, the converted troop carrier which landed Allied troops at “V” Beach, Cape Helles, has been honoured in his home town of Hythe in Hampshire in the Gallipoli Centenary year.
The proposed landing at “V” Beach was tactically flawed and poorly executed, through no fault of Commander Unwin, whose exemplary actions in the landing earned him the Victoria Cross. The SS River Clyde and “V” Beach are synonymous with horrific loss of life for the Hampshire and Irish Regiments that attempted to get ashore in the early morning of 25 April 1915. Read more here:
