Act of remembrance at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli
Together with Gelibolu Dernegi, Gallipoli & Dardanelles International chartered a boat to travel along the coast to Suvla Bay.
Dr Haldun Solmazturk and President John Crowe gently launched two wreaths in remembrance of all those Allied soldiers and Turkish defenders that died and suffered there in 1915.
Two of the UK Group, John Crowe and Arthur Coxon had fathers that landed there in August 1915. Both were wounded but survived. Arthur’s father was taken prisoner and released at the end of the war.
It was a very moving event and although the sea was quite turbulent the wreaths stayed close together until reaching the beach. The wreaths arrived in peace with no gunfire in an act of friendship and remembrance.
G&DI are grateful to Gelibolu Dernegi and to Captain Levent Atil for taking us on such an important cruise.
