Remembering – The battle of the Somme 1916-2016
On Friday lst July the President of G&DI together with member Albert Touboul aged 86 years who had travelled from Paris, attended a commemorative service at All Saints’ Church, King’s Lynn, Norfolk. The large church was filled to capacity with additional seats provided.
Several men from King’s Lynn lost their lives during this battle. Their stories were told during the very moving service.
Following the service, the Mayor of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Clr David Whitby led a procession on foot to the town memorial in Tower Gardens. There followed an act of remembrance where wreaths were laid. A light will now shine in the Greyfriars Tower until November marking the 141 day duration of the battle.
Many men who survived Gallipoli/Dardanelles went on to France and were involved in this, one of the bloodiest battles of the Western Front.
This centenary/anniversary event was organised by the Royal British Legion in King’s Lynn together with Father Adrian Ling at the All Saints’ Church. It was supported by the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk.
