French at Gallipoli
French member of G&DI Eric Lambare visited Gallipoli/Dardanelles in 2015 and is seen at the French National Cemetery at Morto Bay. He is standing beside the grave of Battalion Commander Berhon who was killed May 26th 1915. He was a friend of Eric’s Great Grandfather Captain Gilbert de la Forest Divonne (1879-1915) of 176th Infanterie Regiment who was killed during the attack on the redoubt “Haricot” on June 21st 1915.
There is also an individual photo of his Great Grandfather before leaving for Gallipoli/Dardanelles.
The group photograph shows on the front row left to right Lieutenant Juillet, Commander Berhon, Captain Gilbert de la Forest Divonne and Lieutenant Taillade (also killed on 21st June 1915)
The sacrifice of French troops at Gallipoli/Dardanelles is often unappreciated and forgotten. There were nearly 80,000 French troops there during the course of the campaign of which about 27,000 were killed.
