Annual Gallipoli Memorial Service held at St Nicholas Church, Norfolk, Saturday 16th September 2017.
We are delighted to report that the church was full which shows that there is continued support for remembering the tragic events at Gallipoli in 1915. Many of those present had family members that were involved and at least five whose fathers were there. It was wonderful that seventeen young people attended who can learn and pass on the message for the future.
We welcomed for the first time Jane Sayer, whose father naval Lt Guy D’Oyley Hughes won a DSC and DSO as a submariner in HMS E11 in the Sea of Marmara in 1915.
There were officers representing Turkey, Australia, and Canada. For France a member/historian from Normandy.
17 standards were presented to the alter and fourteen wreaths laid.
Before the service a message of best wishes and friendship was received from the President of Gelibolu Dernegi (Gallipoli Association of Turkey) Suleyman Tass. Also from Dr Haldun Solmazturk, their International Representative and a committee member of G&DI.
After the Service this message of peace and friendship from Turkey, was passed on to the congregation by the President of G&DI.
Next year the date is Saturday 15th September 2018 so please note your diaries.
