In memory of Lt Commander Arthur Coxon, RN (Ret)
It is with great sadness and regret that we announce the passing of one of our most supportive and active members, Arthur Coxon , at the age of 92 years.
Arthur’s father was a Captain with the 5th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, when he was wounded and taken prisoner at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, on 12th August 1915. He remained a prisoner until the end of the war.
Arthur drove the long distance from Wales, where he lived, to Norfolk to attend annual lunches and Gallipoli Memorial Services each year. He did this every year until 2018.
He was a great personal friend of the President. Both their fathers served with the 5th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, at Gallipoli in 1915.
In 2017 he was a member of the annual Gallipoli tour with G&DI. He was a special guest of the elders at the village of Anafarta where he had tea with them. This experience was very important to Arthur. When wreaths were placed in the sea off Suvla Bay by G&DI and Gelibolu Dernegi, Arthur said a prayer for those involved so many years before.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Arthur loved to tell many stories both of his own experiences and those of his father to the delight of those listening.
Rest in peace Arthur, you will be remembered.
