Brigades, Regiments and Battalions engaged at Gallipoli

The Order of Battle for military campaigns is often complex and detailed, and Gallipoli was no exception. The regimental system evolved in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries and in very broad terms a regiment can be described as the largest permanent grouping of soldiers under a commander. Regiments typically comprised about 1000 men, although this number could vary hugely in active combat settings. Other units, e.g., artillery, engineers, etc., were often attached to regiments in the field. In combat, a number of regiments were typically organised as a brigade.

In Britain in the First World War, regiments were subdivided into battalions of 500 – 600 men and were designated by a number, so that for example, the first battalion of the Scots Guards would be known as 1st Scots Guards or 1st bn Scots Guards. When reserve or ‘second line’ battalions were added to a regiment, they were given sub numbers, e.g., 1/5th Norfolks.

The regimental system as described above was not adopted by all countires. The Australians and Indians for example had a single large regiment for administrative purposes within which there were several battalions. For this reason it often makes more sense to refer directly to Brigades and battalions for these forces.

This page is a work in progress. Wherever possible, links have been added to regimental history sites or other sites that cover aspects the regiment’s action at Gallipoli. To save space, shortened regiment names are used, especially for British forces. For example, we are aware that the full title of the Cameronians is The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles).

We have stopped short of listing smaller units such as companies and platoons in the order of battle . This level of detail if often available via regimental records and diaries, and the Long Long Trail site, referred to below, is an excellent resource for British forces.

Acknowledging the huge contribution made, the list below also does not currently include all the artillery, medical, support and logistical units engaged. We are working on this.
