The Turkish “Martyrs Day” on 18th March. Clayhall Naval Cemetery, Turkish Section, Gosport.
This moving ceremony took place on a beautiful sunny day, in the small and immaculate Turkish Section, of Clayhall Naval Cemetery, Gosport. There are 23 Turkish sailors buried there. They had died of Cholera whilst visiting Gosport in 1850 for cross deck training with the Royal Navy.
H.E. The Turkish Ambassador, led the commemoration event with army, air force and navy officers from NATO postings across Europe. This was followed by prayers.
Wreaths were laid, that included one from The Mayor of Gosport, and one for G&DI, laid by Committee Member Paul McCue. Committee member Servet Hassan, was also present
It was very well attended. It was a happy event, filled with the laughter of the children whilst remembering those that had gone before them. A very warm welcome was extended to Paul McCue.
Lest we forget.
